Being honest with yourself is the bravest thing one can do and fighting with the outer world to accept you as who you are is secondary. Being a part of LGBT community is hard to digest for Indian people but some people beating all the stereotypes not only accept themselves as the part of the LGBT community but also set an incredible example for everyone out there is struggling in dealing with themselves. And today in this article we are going to introduce you to one such example, Sathyasri Sharmila who became the first Indian Transgender lawyer and smashed all the barriers.
She officially became the first Indian transgender lawyer by enrolling herself in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTNP). The 36-year-old lawyer has to face many difficulties in the past but now she is happy to be finally accepted as a transgender.
At first, she was considered a man right after she was born. She was born in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram. People referred her by the name Udhayakumar first. She had to leave her house at the age of 18 due to the constant torture and insult of neighbors.
Sathyasri Sharmila completed her graduation in B.com later she changed her career and moved forward towards becoming a lawyer and completed her law degree. But life was still hard for her as she was enrolled as a man but used to get recognized as a woman and that also made it difficult to assign her a hostel room.
After struggling for almost a year Sathyasri Sharmila finally enrolled herself as the first Indian transgender lawyer.
She says, “I was still not confident about the treatment meted out to the transgender community in the society. But I believe things are gradually changing for us. We are beginning to be recognized after the Supreme Court registered us as third genders in 2014. Therefore, I thought the time has come to register myself as a lawyer. Serving the community is my priority now.”
